Golf - Kulim Golf Country Resort

Kulim Golf & Country Resort, an 18 PAR 72 hole 6793 yard (measure at blue tee) course and a closed down 9 hole course. It was under the impression of poor maintenance hence an abandon 9 hole but hey, we still have good 18 holes to enjoy. KGCR is located at Kulim Hi-Tech Park, it is good business meet cum a round of joyful golf place.

Overall the course condition has improved significantly, thanks to the rules set by management, buggies are no longer allowed in the fairways - which is a good thing for the course. Caddie is a must for non members - which disgust most of the golfers that use them. Its sad to say but its a fact that caddie industry in northern Malaysia is never popular. Golfers don't want to pay for the service while on the other hand mediocre caddies that do half ass job is a real piss off. Caddie is a professional job that requires unique skills, but most of them found roaming around the northern Malaysia course are as good as only clubs cleaner; they can't read greens, can't tell you the correct yardage and definitely can't look out where the ball lands. Apart from disgusting compulsory caddies, KGCR has the worst buggies, mostly are salvage from closed down golf clubs. Buggies hardly moves and when they move they hardly stops, when going through roughs everything feels like falling apart. Enough bad impression embedded into the head already? ......hahaha....ok, set aside these negative aspect and lets get back to serious blogging.

Apart from all these negative elements, KGCR still attracts many golfers around Malaysia and International to come play here, simply because the course has unique challenges. Overall the greens are in good condition, approach high and you will see rewarding results; an instantaneous bite or even a back spin like the PGA pros. Most of the fairways are in good condition accept index #6 hole PAR 5 at the back nine - where its always soggy/fairways under repair condition on the second shot. Besides index hole #6 and #4 which posses very tight fairways and blind greens, the rest of the holes are decent for mid/low handicappers. Distance wise, the course is average and its measured in yardage. The most confusing part of Malaysia's golf course is inconsistency in course measurement; some are in meters and some are in yardage, so make sure it on the score card prior to the first tee off and you be all set to enjoy all 18 holes. KGCR has 2 long PAR 3 which measures at 200 yards both heavily guarded by a man made pond. Hit it too long and you'll find yourself OB/unplayable. Signature hole is hole #18 where tee box sits very high; club house is used as a backdrop of hole #18; for 300 yard long drivers, single shot onto the green is very much feasible, but anything short will ended up in a Lily pond. KGCR golf architect makes full use of the surrounding Hi-Tech factories and bungalows as backdrops; for example SilkTera is sitting right behind a downhill hole 10. Infenion is nicely sighted at hole 11/12 and bungalows are at sight on hole 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, and 11.

Returning from the course is the golf house, where they serve food and beverages. The food has varieties of western and local delicacies, but are decent taste only. Shower room needs an overhaul for a fresher new looks - and when they do don't forget to include windows. Current one is really non eco-freindly/sustainability wasn't designed into. Pro shop is one of the smallest I have seen and I won't be surprise if no one will buy golf product from the shop. Visitors will definitely need assistance to locate the Pro shop.

If you ask me, I'll definitely revisit this golf course for a memorable golfing experience. All the management has to do is keep up the good work on the course maintenance and REMOVE the worthless CADDIES.
